Gravenhurst green lights 4% accommodation tax
The Town of Gravenhurst has approved the 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax By-law for rentals 30 days or less, in the August 9, 2022, Council meeting.
The Town’s administration has been directed to proceed with the next steps of the implementation process, with the goal to be in effect starting January 31, 2023, “the same time as the STR By-law implementation,” said the Town’s Manager of Tourism and Destination Co-ordinator, Amy Taylor.
The timeframe will provide a “longer education and awareness phase,” said Taylor.
“60% of the tax will go to the third party and 40% to the municipality,” indicated Taylor, adding “the revenue collection [of the municipality] will be through a third party.”
The process of service will be outlined to Council in the upcoming September report.
Violations of this By-law can be subject to a minimum fine of $500 to a maximum of $10,000, and resolution and enforcement measures for outstanding tax, penalties or unpaid interest includes garnishments, seizure and sale of property, and liens, as necessary.
