SIU closes case in fatal car chase
The Director of the SIU, Joseph Martino says he has found no reasonable grounds to believe that an OPP officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a 41-year-old man in April.
According to the report, two suspects escaped south on Highway 11 as police were responding to a break-and-enter in Huntsville. The two are accused of stealing a vehicle that was later disabled by a spike strip after theirs was damaged by a police spike strip.
An OPP officer then pursued a man in a stolen police cruiser, on Sideroad 15/16 in Oro-Medonte, as it was believed the man had involved in the break and enter in the Huntsville.
Police say the man travelled at a high rate of speed before hitting the ditch. He died in hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.
Martino found no reasonable grounds to believe the subject official transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law, leaving no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case.
The SIU says the file has been closed.
