Through The Mike O'Shea Series, a gripping police procedural, Desmond brings the authenticity of detective work to life, rooted in real-world details. On the lighter side, A Pint of Trouble takes readers into the world of cozy mysteries, where a mildly Machiavellian amateur sleuth solves murders with humor and charm.
This talk will offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at the balance between fact and fiction, showing how firsthand knowledge of police work can create both intense, realistic thrillers and fun, character-driven mysteries. Whether you're a writer, reader, or just curious about the link between fact and fiction, you'll walk away with new insights into the art of crafting crime fiction that resonates with authenticity, no matter the tone.
As a police detective, Ryan worked in some of the city's toughest and most challenging neighborhoods. His experience on the frontlines of law enforcement—dealing with everything from routine investigations to high-risk operations—gives his crime fiction a raw, unflinching authenticity. Whether he's digging into the dark, gritty world of policing in The Mike O'Shea Series or spinning a more offbeat mystery in A Pint of Trouble, Desmond Ryan's writing pulls no punches. His stories reflect the harsh realities of crime, the toll it takes on those who fight it, and the flawed humanity of everyone involved. Desmond Ryan’s characters—complicated, sometimes broken, but always real—are shaped by years spent on the streets, making his books as hard-edged as the world they depict.
