Chris, Hailey, and the Sluman family have deep roots right here in Huntsville. This is home. This is where they come from. And when word spread about what this family was facing, Huntsville didn't hesitate for a single second. You demanded a chance to show up for them — and that says everything about this community and the love it has for the Slumans.
So here we are. We're bringing Stand With Sluman home.
On January 4th, 2026, the Sluman and Bertrand family's world changed forever. Chris Sluman — a hardworking farrier who has spent his life in service to this community and its animals — was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is fighting for his life, and he is not fighting alone.
Chris's wife, Dr. Hailey Bertrand-Sluman, is a beloved veterinarian who has dedicated her career to caring for the animals and families of this region. Together, they are raising their daughter Briar — and right now, this beautiful family needs their village to show up for them the way they have always shown up for others.
Chris's best path forward — the one that gives him the highest chance of survival — requires two life-saving drugs that are approved in Ontario but not covered. The cost? Over $330,000. And that doesn't account for the loss of income, travel, and day-to-day costs this family will carry over the coming months and years.
No family should have to fight cancer and fight for coverage at the same time. So we're doing something about it.
