The disorder that affects brain function and motor skills
Billy Joel has officially called off the rest of his 2025 tour after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a , particularly in older adults. The announcement comes just ahead of a string of scheduled performances in cities across North America and the UK.
NPH is caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which can lead to difficulty walking, memory issues, and problems with bladder control. Although the condition doesn't raise brain pressure in the usual sense, the fluid buildup can interfere with cognitive and physical functions. Joel began experiencing worsening symptoms this year, including impaired balance, reduced hearing, and vision problems.
In a message to fans, Joel said the choice to step away from touring wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. He noted that performing has always been a big part of who he is, but that right now, taking care of his health has to come first. His medical team has since placed him on a treatment plan that includes physical therapy and ongoing care.
The canceled tour dates included 17 shows including Toronto, and multiple dates in the US & the UK. Refunds are being issued automatically to all ticket holders.
This change of plans interrupts what has been a long and successful touring career, including a historic nine-year residency at Madison Square Garden that wrapped up last year. While there’s no word on whether Joel will perform again, he did express a desire to return to the stage once he’s able.
Fans will still get a new look at Joel’s story next month when Billy Joel: And So It Goes premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary includes personal footage and a deeper look at his life and career, offering fans a chance to reflect on his legacy during this pause.
