The Big Mix: Inside the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ballot

Wednesday, 25 February 2026 13:03

From the metal anthems of Iron Maiden to the soulful perfection of Sade, the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees prove that "rock" is a wider tent than ever before

The guest list for music’s most exclusive club just dropped, and it looks a lot like the ultimate multi-genre playlist. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced its 17 nominees for the Class of 2026, and the names range from Britpop rebels and heavy metal legends to the "Queen of Christmas" herself.

This year’s ballot is defined by two things: variety and fresh faces. Out of the 17 acts listed, 10 are first-time nominees. Among those making their debut is Phil Collins, who is looking to become a rare "two-time" inductee. While he entered the Hall in 2010 with his band Genesis, this is the first time his massive solo career—defined by hits like "In the Air Tonight"—is being considered on its own.

Also earning first-time nods are several artists who helped shape the sound of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Pop icons Pink and Shakira join hip-hop and soul standout Lauryn Hill among the newcomers, while the late Jeff Buckley receives a long-awaited recognition for his deeply emotional catalogue. R&B legend Luther Vandross is finally in the mix, alongside trailblazing boy band New Edition, bringing both smooth soul and classic group energy to the ballot.

But it wouldn't be the Rock Hall without some long-standing debates. Iron Maiden, the pioneers of British heavy metal, are back on the ballot for their third time. Fans have long argued the band has been "snubbed," and this year they face off against fellow Brits Oasis and the combined nomination of Joy Division/New Order.

The list also welcomes back Mariah Carey, whose 19 number-one hits make her a statistical titan, and the ever-cool Sade. For those who prefer their music with a bit more grit, the Wu-Tang Clan and The Black Crowes are back in the running, proving that the Hall’s definition of "Rock & Roll" is less about a specific instrument and more about a cultural shift.

To be eligible, an artist must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago. Now, the power moves to the voters—a group of 1,200 artists, historians, and industry insiders—plus a "Fan Vote" where the public can weigh in online.

The winners will be announced in late April, with a massive induction ceremony planned for this fall. Whether you’re rooting for the heavy riffs of metal or the smooth grooves of 80s soul, one thing is clear: the Class of 2026 is going to be one for the history books.
