The band says they want to evolve, but stay true to their roots
After nearly a decade since their last studio album, U2 is poised to make a significant return to the music scene with a new project that frontman Bono describes as “the sound of the future.” The band is currently in the final stages of recording, marking their first collection of original material since 2017’s Songs of Experience.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Bono said the band is throwing themselves into the new project with a real sense of urgency and hunger. This sentiment underscores the band's commitment to evolving their sound while staying true to their roots.
The upcoming album reunites U2 with renowned producer Brian Eno, known for his work on some of the band’s most iconic records, including The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. Bassist Adam Clayton hinted at a unique musical direction, describing the new material as “science fiction Irish folk music,” suggesting a blend of traditional influences with futuristic elements.
Recording sessions have taken a more organic approach, with the band opting to play together live in the studio, aiming to capture the authentic energy of their performances. This method contrasts with the heavily produced techniques prevalent in modern music production and reflects U2's desire to reconnect with the essence of their sound.
Drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who had been recovering from surgery and missed the band's recent Las Vegas residency, has rejoined the group in the studio. His return has revitalized the band's dynamic, contributing to the cohesive and passionate atmosphere during recording sessions.
While the album's title and release date remain under wraps, the band has indicated that they are aiming for a release in the near future. As U2 approaches their 50th anniversary, this upcoming album represents not only a milestone in their illustrious career but also a bold step forward into new musical territories.
