Huntsville still silent on cyber attack

Thursday, 10 July 2025 11:19

Council promised to provide details "once the process" was finished

A cyber fraud case in Hamilton has led to charges against a 32-year-old Surrey, B.C. man after more than half a million dollars was mistakenly sent to a fake vendor account. Police say the scam began when a staffer received a doctored email in March 2024, shortly after the city had already been hit by a ransomware attack. Believing it to be legitimate, the staffer processed a payment for over $550,000.

Investigators have since recovered most of the money, but the city still faces a $130,000 loss and legal costs. The man turned himself in earlier this month and faces fraud and money laundering charges.

Meanwhile in Huntsville, the town has remained largely silent on its own ransomware attack — more than a year after it happened. The breach was confirmed in March 2024, and while systems have since been restored, no details have been released about what data was compromised or whether residents' personal information was exposed. Officials say the investigation remains ongoing but have offered no public updates since last year.
