Muskoka's only locally owned, not for profit radio station celebrates 16 years. Thanks go out to our listeners, sponsors, volunteers and staff
Hunters Bay Radio (The Bay 88.7), Muskoka's only locally owned and operated radio station, celebrated its 16th birthday on September 14th. Founded in 2009 by Jeff Carter and initially, Brian Thompson, the station began as an internet-only venture before receiving approval from the CRTC in 2013 to operate a Community Licence FM station. On May 18, 2014, CKAR-FM began broadcasting, becoming a vital part of the Huntsville community.
A Legacy of Local Programming
Over the years, Hunters Bay Radio has evolved and distinguished itself through its commitment to local content. The station offers a diverse range of programming, including music, news, talk shows, and coverage of local events. Notable programs such as Muskoka Morning with Grant Nickalls, and Sarah Coombs in the Afternoon have become staples for listeners seeking community-focused content – winning the award for Best Radio Station five years in a row!
The station has also been instrumental in supporting local charities, donating over $650,000 through initiatives like its weekly bingo.
Together with its partners in The Bay Food Crew (Bullock’s Independent Grocer, Dairy Lane Dental, Capstone Markets, Dreams Becoming Reality Marketing), the collaboration has garnered over half a million dollars to food banks.
The Role of News and Talk Radio
In addition to its musical offerings, Hunters Bay Radio provides comprehensive news and talk programming. The station covers local news, weather, and community affairs, ensuring that listeners are informed about issues that directly impact them. Programs like Muskoka Morning feature interviews with local leaders, business owners, musicians and community organizers, fostering a platform for dialogue and engagement.
Community Radio License and Its Significance
Operating under a Community radio license, Hunters Bay Radio differs from commercial stations in its mandate and operations. The CRTC-approved license allows the station to focus on serving the community's interests rather than generating profits for shareholders. This structure enables Hunters Bay Radio to prioritize local content, volunteer involvement, and community service. As a not-for-profit entity, the station reinvests its revenues into community initiatives, supporting causes such as healthcare, food security, and senior services.
Celebrating Volunteers and Community Support
The station's success is largely attributed to its dedicated team of volunteers. Individuals like Dave Laycock, who joined the station in 2020, have brought fresh perspectives and energy to the programming lineup. “SaturDave” was approached by Carter through his interactions with the station's DJs and has since become a beloved on-air personality, while Shauna Leigh Taylor keeps the public informed through our social media channels.
The Bingo team, vital to raising funds for the community is headed by Joan Wager and a group of a dozen volunteers.
In all, more than 50 people volunteer at the station, in front of the mic and behind the scenes. At a recent Volunteer Appreciation Picnic, Aaron Hall was given the Volunteer of the Year Award for his many contributions.
Looking Ahead
As Hunters Bay Radio celebrates its 16th anniversary, it remains committed to its mission of providing local, volunteer-driven content that reflects the spirit of Muskoka and the Almaguin Highlands.
With plans to expand its reach and continue supporting community initiatives, the station is poised to remain a cornerstone of local media for years to come.
We’d like to thank the many listeners who make what we do possible, supporting our volunteers, sharing their feedback, supporting our fundraisers and helping The Bay remain a truly community-driven station.
