Decades after its release, the record-breaking album by Huntsville’s own country-pop icon remains the highest-selling album by a female artist in history.
On November 4, 1997, country star Shania Twain released her record-breaking crossover hit, Come On Over. What followed was a cultural shift that redefined country music, kickstarted by bold anthems like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” that instantly captured global attention.
Twain had already proven her hit-making prowess with her 1995 album, The Woman in Me, which earned a rare Diamond certification from the RIAA. Yet, with Come On Over, the artist bested herself. The 16-track album spawned an astonishing 12 singles, weaving tender acoustic ballads like “You’re Still the One” into an unforgettable tracklist.
Long before she was selling out stadiums around the world and breaking global charts, Shania Twain called Huntsville her home. Her roots run deep here in Muskoka, where her family still resides today. For local residents, seeing an artist build a career that could deliver timeless love songs like “From This Moment On” remains a point of immense community pride.
Upon release, Come On Over quickly crossed genre boundaries, blending country narrative with pop hooks, powerhouse production, and unforgettable visual style in tracks like “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” It soon became the best-selling country album of all time. Over the years, the critically acclaimed LP continued to smash global records, eventually earning the title of the best-selling album of all time by a female artist, as well as the highest-selling album by a Canadian act.
Today, Come On Over remains one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. Decades after its initial release, its influence can still be felt across pop and country music alike—a timeless masterpiece with its roots right here in Huntsville.
