This Sunday, Huntsville will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a special performance by acclaimed Indigenous singer-songwriter Logan Staats at River Mill Park.

If the name sounds familiar, there's a good reason. Logan Staats has become one of the most respected voices in Canadian roots, folk, country, and Americana music. The Mohawk artist from Six Nations of the Grand River first gained national attention after winning CTV's The Launch in 2018, but his story began long before television audiences discovered him.

Raised in a musical family, Staats spent years honing his craft in clubs, coffee houses, and community events, developing a sound rooted in storytelling, soulful vocals, and honest songwriting. His music blends elements of folk, country, blues, and rock while drawing from personal experiences and Indigenous perspectives.

His latest single, Rainwater and Whiskey, continues that tradition. The song explores themes of duality, healing, and personal struggle through two powerful symbols. For Staats, rainwater represents life, protection, and the sacred role water holds in Indigenous teachings. Whiskey, on the other hand, symbolizes addiction, trauma, and the lasting impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities.

Staats says the song reflects on difficult periods in his own life, while also acknowledging the struggles he's witnessed among friends, family members, and community members. Through music, he's found a way to process those experiences and transform them into something meaningful.

Musically, Rainwater and Whiskey leans into classic country and blues influences, featuring rich arrangements with horns, organ, and layered vocal harmonies. The result is a song that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

The new single follows another successful chapter in Staats' career. Earlier this year, his song Medicine Wheel climbed to number one on the Indigenous Music Countdown, while his powerful single Empty Hands continued to earn praise from fans and critics alike.

It's been a busy year for the artist. Staats recently completed a cross-country Songs and Stories tour alongside fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Julian Taylor. He also performed a sold-out show with Terra Lightfoot as part of the Road to the JUNOs series in Hamilton and spent time at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity as an artist-in-residence, working alongside other creators and developing new material.

His growing profile has led to expanded international opportunities as well. This year he signed with Strada Music Agency, helping bring his music to audiences across the United Kingdom and Europe while continuing to build on an already impressive Canadian following.

Despite the growing recognition, what continues to resonate most with audiences is Staats' authenticity. His songs often tackle difficult subjects, but they do so with honesty, vulnerability, and hope. Whether he's singing about personal hardship, Indigenous identity, resilience, family, or healing, listeners are drawn to the sincerity behind every lyric.

That makes his appearance during National Indigenous Peoples Day especially meaningful. The day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the cultures, histories, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. Through artists like Logan Staats, those stories continue to be shared, preserved, and brought to new audiences.

You can catch Logan Staats live this Sunday at River Mill Park in Huntsville as part of the community's National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations.
