Aitchison says he will step down by the end of the year to pursue other interests
Parry Sound–Muskoka MP Scott Aitchison has officially confirmed he is stepping down.
In a letter released yesterday, the former Huntsville mayor announced he will resign his seat in the House of Commons at the conclusion of the fall parliamentary session.
Aitchison, who was first elected to municipal council at age 21 before serving as Huntsville’s mayor and eventually heading to Ottawa in 2019, called the decision difficult, saying that after 30 years in public life, it’s time to explore new opportunities.
The Shadow Housing Minister and 2022 Conservative leadership candidate informed party leader Pierre Poilievre of his departure last week. His exit will trigger a local by-election once he formally steps down later this year.
