The structure is on timers and will not be available outside of arrival times
Bracebridge General Committee approved the agreement for the train station project near Hiram Street, in the June 11, 2025, special meeting.
According to the agenda, the Town is renewing their 20-year land lease agreement with Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) for the construction and operation of a new train station.
The train station will be adjacent to the Hiram Street parking lot at 85 Hiram Street.
The ONTC will be responsible for covering costs for implementing the lease agreement.
Staff advised that today’s special meeting was to expedite the lease in order to “get the project moving forward” so that work can proceed and they can get the transportation services in.
They added that they anticipate the work to begin early this summer, “something they want to move on quite quickly.”
Upon inquiry about whether the project will impact traffic, staff advised that there will be an area of the south end of the parking lot portioned off for construction as needed.
They also indicated that they expect 7 parking spaces for ONTC, including overnight parking and two for accessibility purposes. There will be signs to indicate usage.
Councillor, Archie Buie, indicated that the Accessibility Committee has reviewed the plans and are pleased with the set up and that it meets accessibility needs.
Councillor, Debbie Vernon, inquired about how the station and area will “be maintained and managed against vandalism,” and prevent people from using the shelter “unauthorized.”
Staff advised that the station will be maintained by ONTC, which will include having cameras in place. They added that the Town also maintains the conditions of the parking lots year-round.
Mayor, Rick Maloney, said, “The design has safety features,” as well that are similar to Go station platforms to eliminate blind spots.
Staff added that access will also be on timers, based on arrival and departure of the train “so there won’t be full access to the structure 24/7.” They said, “So that should assist as well.”
