Muskoka entrepreneur Jan Nyquist is marking 45 years of Pipefusion Services Inc. and turning 71, while continuing to lead the company he says he has no plans to leave.
In an era where corporate culture is often defined by rapid pivots and exit strategies, Jan Nyquist is a striking anomaly. This June, Nyquist celebrates two major milestones: his 71st birthday and the 45th anniversary of Pipefusion Services Inc., the parent company of the ubiquitous NyDock floating dock systems.

Yet, if you look for Nyquist, you won’t find him relaxing on a beach or perfecting his golf swing. You will find him at the office, working alongside his team, planning the company’s next big expansion.
“I do not fear death,” Nyquist says with a characteristic chuckle. “I fear retirement. When you retire, you can only look backward. I still want to look forward. I love what I do.”
That forward-looking mindset has propelled a small Muskoka-rooted enterprise, incorporated in June of 1981, into an international manufacturing powerhouse. Today, Pipefusion and NyDock products are shipped across North America, servicing everything from local cottage waterfronts to massive industrial mining operations.

A Culture of Generosity
If you ask Nyquist to explain the secret behind nearly a half-century of continuous growth, he won't point to a complex spreadsheet or a ruthless marketing campaign. Instead, he speaks of a deeply ingrained personal philosophy.
Throughout his life and career, Nyquist’s guiding motto has been to put customers, employees, and friends ahead of himself—striving to give more than he takes in every single human encounter.
“I am not sure where this line of thinking comes from,” Nyquist admits. “It is not an intentional business strategy for success. I have always been this way. I do these things because I want to, not because I have to.”

Intentional or not, the philosophy has cultivated a fierce brand loyalty and a deeply dedicated workforce. Nyquist is quick to share the spotlight for the company's longevity, noting that Pipefusion’s modern success would be impossible without his partners, Brad and Ginny Payne, who became shareholders in 2018. Together, they have fostered an environment where the company's thirty employees and eleven stocking dealers across Ontario are treated less like staff and more like an extended family.
From Muskoka Waterfronts to the Global Market
What began as a specialized service has evolved into an expansive, environmentally friendly product portfolio. Under its mission statement—to create value through innovation, quality, and technology—Pipefusion has diversified into an array of residential, commercial, municipal, and industrial applications.
On the residential and recreation side, the NyDock brand has become synonymous with the Canadian summer lifestyle. They manufacture everything from standard floating docks and pontoons to specialized luxury waterfront additions, including:
- Sauna docks and hammock docks
- Floating picnic tables and kayak docks
- Custom dock boats and floating boat houses
- Dog ramps designed specifically for safe water access

Simultaneously, the industrial arm of the company handles heavy-duty polyethylene piping, custom pipe fittings, and high-stakes fusion installation services. These products are critical components in road operations, driveways, logging infrastructure, and complex municipal and mining projects.
Perhaps most impressive is the company's recent geographic reach. Despite a volatile global economy, fluctuating tariffs, and international uncertainty, Pipefusion has shipped more products across Canada and the United States over the last two years than at any other point in its 45-year history.
While its heart remains firmly in Muskoka and Ontario, NyDock’s high-density polyethylene structures can now be found weathering the elements in Alberta, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories. South of the border, the company’s footprint spans from the rugged coast of Alaska and Washington State, down to the sunny shorelines of California, and across to Michigan, Colorado, and New York.
The Next Chapter
Forty-five years in business is a rare achievement, but for Pipefusion Services Inc., it feels less like a finish line and more like a foundation for what comes next. By combining robust engineering with an old-school approach to human relationships, Nyquist and his partners have proven that doing good and doing well are not mutually exclusive.
As the company looks to the future, its mission remains anchored in enriching the community and protecting the natural environments where its products sit. And as long as there are new waterways to navigate and new designs to innovate, Jan Nyquist will be right there at the helm—looking straight ahead.
