The chamber of commerce and several area associations oppose the idea
A proposed contractor licensing system in Muskoka Lakes is drawing pushback from the local business community.
The idea came up after a resident raised concerns at a January planning meeting about what she described as extensive illegal construction, property damage and environmental harm caused by contractors working beyond property boundaries. Mayor Peter Kelley said the case was among the most serious council has seen and sparked discussion about tighter oversight of who is allowed to work in the township.
But days later, the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce, the Muskoka Builders’ Association and the Our Muskoka Stakeholders Association sent a joint letter opposing the plan, arguing it would duplicate existing rules, increase costs and unfairly burden responsible contractors.
Council says it will revisit the issue at a future meeting.
