The comments come as the Ford government announce intentions to appoint the District Chair
The Ontario government is proposing major changes to how regional government works in Muskoka—drawing mixed reaction locally.
Under the proposed Better Regional Governance Act, the province would appoint the District of Muskoka chair for the next term and give that role “strong chair” powers to speed up decisions on housing and infrastructure.
Parry Sound–Muskoka MPP Graydon Smith says stronger leadership will help cut costs and keep projects moving as the region grows.
But the plan is already facing resistance, with critics arguing it removes local control and gives too much power to the province.
The legislation is now before Queen’s Park, with changes expected to take effect after the 2026 municipal election if passed.
