The school board is under pressure following delays opening a new school in Parry Sound
Ontario’s education system is facing a major shakeup as Minister Paul Calandra signals he’s ready to take direct control of troubled school boards under new powers passed at Queen’s Park.
The legislation makes it easier for the province to place boards under supervision and require police officers in more schools. Calandra is already eyeing the Near North District School Board, after a government review found deep dysfunction and delays on a new Parry Sound school. He says if the board doesn’t meet provincial directives, he’ll step in.
Opposition parties and school groups call the bill undemocratic, warning it sidelines elected trustees and pushes policing in schools.
