Fire Dept. reminds residents to keep laneways accessible for Firetrucks

Monday, 6 July 2026 11:06

Failure to keep private roads and laneways clear could cause delays in emergency response

Muskoka fire departments are putting out a reminder to cottage and seasonal property owners to check that private roads and driveways are clear enough for emergency vehicles to get through.

Officials say it’s a recurring problem in rural areas where trees and brush gradually narrow access routes. That can slow fire crews and, in some cases, prevent trucks from reaching a property quickly. They also note that low branches can cause damage to large apparatus and create safety risks for firefighters.

Crews are asking residents to cut back vegetation and make sure roads are wide and tall enough for fire trucks to pass, and that there is space available for vehicles to turn around safely rather than being forced to back out in an emergency.

The message from fire officials is simple: if a truck can’t get in, help is delayed.
