The Friends of the Muskoka Watershed will monitor chloride levels in local waterways
The Township of Lake of Bays is supporting a new project aimed at tracking road salt pollution in local waterways.
Through its Environmental Projects Grant Program, funding has been awarded to Friends of the Muskoka Watershed to monitor chloride levels in the Oxtongue and Boyne Rivers, which flow into Lake of Bays.
Volunteers will collect water samples to help researchers better understand how road salt moves through the watershed and affects water quality. Officials say chloride can be harmful to aquatic life, particularly in Muskoka's soft-water lakes.
The project is part of ongoing efforts to protect watershed health and raise awareness about responsible salt use across the region.
