The market has been operating for 25 years
The Township of Lake of Bays indicated they’re seeking new community partner to take over the Baysville Farmers Market, in the February 10, 2026, Council meeting.
Staff indicated there was a potential for the market to end if they didn’t step in. The said, “We’ll do our best to keep it and give the opportunity for a group to come forward to manage it to preserve something that brings a lot of people in the community.”
The added that it will be extended for a 3-year term and moved to “the core of Town,” near the library and community centre for greater exposure.
According to the staff report, the Township will operate the market at the Lake of Bays Community Centre during the 2026 season, beginning June 26 until September 4, on Fridays, with proposed hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the option to extend to 7 p.m. if vendor demand supports it.
There is also the potential to extend the season to Thanksgiving, depending on its success.
The report adds that the market has a long history in the community, operating for approximately 25 years.
It was recently managed by the Season 2 Season Garden Centre, which advised it is no longer able to continue. Following this announcement, residents expressed strong support for keeping it because of its importance to the area’s social, economic, and community life.
Financially, staff estimate revenue of approximately $2,750 in the 2026 season based on ten vendors, which is expected to cover staff time required to operate it without negatively impacting the municipal budget.
Vendor fees have been set at $275 for the season or $30 per pre-booked date, with additional fees for electrical sites.
Staff emphasized that identifying a community partner remains a priority, with the goal of transitioning the market to local leadership while ensuring its long-term sustainability in Baysville.
Council agreed to the plan for the Township to manage and operate it on an interim basis while actively seeking a new community partner to take over its long-term operation. During this period, Township staff will continue outreach and engagement with local organizations interested in assuming responsibility for operating it in the future.
Council also directed staff to return on March 10th with a by-law establishing formal rules and guidelines for the market, as well as amendments to the Township's Fees and Charges By-law.
