New funding supports new school of medicine

Tuesday, 4 August 2026 15:05

The funding will help address the shortage of doctors in Muskoka

Ontario is investing $55.8 million to support the development of York University’s new School of Medicine, which is expected to open in 2028.

The province says the school will be Ontario’s first focused on training family doctors, helping address shortages in primary care. The investment will support planning, accreditation, curriculum development and operations, with the school expected to eventually train hundreds of medical students and residents.

York University says the program will help expand access to health care across York Region, Simcoe County, Muskoka and surrounding areas.
