New plans in the works for Huntsville Public Library

Tuesday, 28 April 2026 07:03

The long term plan includes more operating hours and an expanded space

Huntsville Council received recommendations for new plans for the Town’s library, in the April 27th, meeting.

Library Master Plan consultants, Lisa Miettinen and Bill Curran, outlined strategic recommendations for areas including development, services, collections, facilities, and technology planning.

The summary outlines a long-term vision for how the library could evolve to better meet the needs of the expanding community through improvements to services, collections, facilities, technology, and staffing.

A key focus is expanding access and community engagement. The plan calls for increasing open hours to at least 52 hours per week, including evening hours multiple nights a week to better accommodate working residents, and emphasizes ongoing community consultation to help determine the most effective service hours and to guide programming, partnerships, and outreach efforts, particularly for underserved groups.

The recommendations also highlight changes to how library materials are managed. A formal collection development plan would be implemented to guide purchasing decisions based on demand and circulation trends.

Annual spending on materials is proposed to increase, alongside exploring community-supported initiatives such as donation programs. At the same time, there is a shift toward digitizing local history materials and reducing the physical space required for those collections, in collaboration with municipal and historical partners.

Facility planning is another major component, with a recommended increased building size of approximately 27,500 square feet. The design would prioritize flexible, open spaces with moveable shelving, expanded program and meeting rooms, and a larger makerspace to support learning and community activities. Seating capacity would increase to at least 171 seats, with a mix of lounge, study, and collaborative areas, along with dedicated multi-purpose and private study rooms.

Technology and innovation are also central to the plan. This includes developing a comprehensive technology strategy, expanding makerspace offerings, and conducting a community survey to better understand needs related to internet access, digital skills, and training. Public training programs and staff development would support these efforts.

To support expanded services, staffing levels would increase, along with the introduction of new roles focused on innovation, technology support, and programming. Overall, the plan aims to create a more flexible, accessible, and community-focused library that can adapt to future needs.

The plan was met with positive feedback from Council members who also expressed appreciation to the library board for the hard work and passion that goes into the existing facility.

Mayor, Nancy Alcock, said, “Double the size would be fantastic.” She added, “It’s a small but mighty team… There’s so much that currently is being done.”

Further discussion and inquiries about one of the options for a new space informed Council that the best decision moving forward would be a location that remains accessible - easy for the community to get to and preferably be able to walk to within about 10 minutes and in line with the Town’s transit system.

Councillor, Jason FitzGerald, indicated that the matter has something they have been discussing for “a long time, and the cost always seems to overwhelm us.”

He added, “I love that we have a plan, and that we want to move forward, and that we’re going to move forward.”
