Police increase patrols this long weekend

Thursday, 3 September 2026 09:48

OPP say the Labour Day long weekend is one of the deadliest of the summer

The OPP is reminding drivers, boaters and trail users to make safety a priority this Labour Day long weekend.

Police say Labour Day has been the deadliest long weekend on OPP-patrolled roads, trails and waterways over the past decade. Since 2015, there have been 69 collisions and 76 deaths.

Most road fatalities involved impaired driving, speeding, distraction or failing to wear a seatbelt or helmet. On the water, most deaths involved people not wearing lifejackets.

The OPP say they will be increasing enforcement and reminds anyone who spots an impaired or dangerous driver to call 9-1-1 when it's safe to do so.
