Police urge boaters to wear life jackets

Friday, 19 June 2026 13:01

80% of victims last year were boaters who were not wearing a pfd.

As summer boating season gets underway, OPP are reminding people that wearing a life jacket can save lives.

The OPP says nearly 80 per cent of boating fatalities investigated in 2025 involved people who were not wearing a personal flotation device. Most deaths occurred in small boats such as canoes and kayaks, and adult men accounted for almost 90 per cent of the fatalities.

Police are urging boaters to wear a properly fitted, Transport Canada-approved life jacket, make sure there is one for every passenger, and check weather and water conditions before heading out.

The OPP says the simplest way to stay safe on the water is to wear your life jacket every time.
