The water is cold, and wearing a pfd increases your chances of survival if you fall overboard
Ontario Provincial Police say more than 100 people have died in the past decade while using canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards in marine incidents across the province.
Investigators report that the majority of victims were not wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device at the time of the accident, a factor authorities say significantly increased the risk of death during capsizing or falls overboard.
Officials are urging boaters and paddlers to wear proper safety equipment at all times and to avoid alcohol or drug use while on the water as part of Safe Boating Awareness Week.
The OPP says preparation, weather awareness, and lifejacket use remain the most effective ways to prevent future tragedies on Ontario waterways.
