Excessive road salt use is putting area lakes at risk
Friends of the Muskoka Watershed is bringing back its SALTYNovember campaign, encouraging residents to reduce the amount of road salt they use this winter.
The month-long initiative includes educational events, pop-up appearances at local stores and opportunities to track personal salt use. A special online presentation and question-and-answer session featuring freshwater experts is scheduled for November 19th, from 7 to 8 p.m.
The group says excessive salt use is putting Muskoka lakes at risk. District monitoring shows 28 per cent of sampled sites have chloride levels above what's considered safe for sensitive aquatic life. Residents can find event details and learn how to reduce salt use at fotmw.org
