Two separate incidents occurred on Georgian Bay this weekend
Spring ice conditions on Georgian Bay have proven deadly and dangerous for snowmobilers.
On March 29, 2026, near Beausoleil Island, a 62-year-old man from Penetanguishene was killed after losing control and being ejected onto the ice. Emergency crews, including an airboat, helicopter, and paramedics, responded, but the rider was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Just two nights earlier, near Robin's Point Road in Tay Township, two snowmobilers fell through thinning ice. Both were wearing flotation suits and were rescued safely by local fire crews and paramedics.
Authorities are reminding everyone to exercise caution on spring ice, which can be unpredictable and deadly.
