Strong Mayor powers coming to Muskoka towns

Wednesday, 9 April 2025 14:28

The province has proposed "Strong Mayor" powers

The Ontario government is proposing to give so-called strong mayor powers to 169 more municipalities—including Huntsville, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst.

If approved, mayors in these towns could soon bypass majority council votes to push through bylaws, veto decisions, and hire or fire senior staff.

The Ford government says the move will cut red tape and speed up housing construction. The powers could take effect May 1, but critics say the plan is undemocratic and gives too much control to one person.
