The man serving a sentence for the murder of his girlfriend is accused of killing another inmate in a common area
A jury trial is underway in Bracebridge for a man accused of killing a fellow inmate at Beaver Creek Institution near Gravenhurst in December 2022.
Prosecutors allege 57-year-old Devon Saunders, who is already serving a life sentence for a previous murder, planned and carried out the fatal stabbing of 30-year-old Leslie Ma inside a prison common area.
The Crown says surveillance video shows the two men interacting shortly before Ma was found suffering multiple stab wounds.
The defence argues Saunders acted in self-defence after feeling threatened inside the institution, pointing to prior conflicts between inmates.
The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
