A decade after 11.7 million Canadians stood still, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 232 in Huntsville and Branch 276 in Kearney are bringing local fans together on Saturday, August 22, to relive the experience
Ten years after an estimated 11.7 million Canadians tuned in to watch The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, fans across the Almaguin Highlands and Muskoka will have the chance to relive the historic broadcast together on the big screen.
On Saturday, August 22, 2026, CBC will televise the 10th anniversary rebroadcast of the band’s emotional final 2016 concert from Kingston, running commercial-free from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. To mark the milestone, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 232 in Huntsville and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 276 in Kearney are both opening their doors to the public for town-wide watch parties, broadcasting the event across every television in their respective halls.
The 2016 performance marked the culmination of a cross-country tour mounted following frontman Gord Downie’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis. A decade later, local organizers in both Huntsville and Kearney are bringing their communities together to honor the iconic band's legacy.
"You can watch it on your couch, but that’s not how this music works," said local resident Dave Miller. "The Hip is part of the groundwater around here. When Gord sang about dark woods and lake bottoms, he was talking about our backyard. Bringing everyone together at the Legion to hear those songs again just feels right."
At the Huntsville branch, the day-long event will feature local food vendor Dos Bandidos serving menu items throughout the day, alongside full bar service. Meanwhile, the Kearney Legion will also host local fans gathering to share memories, food, and drinks while watching the historic three-hour broadcast.
Organizers in Huntsville have also lined up giveaways running throughout the evening. Attendees will have the opportunity to win a variety of "uber Canadian" prize packages, culminating in a grand prize draw for a vinyl copy of The Hip's seminal album Fully Completely, donated by The Record Shoppe in Huntsville.
Legion officials in both communities emphasized that the events are free and open to everyone, with no membership required to attend.
Festivities at both Royal Canadian Legion Branch 232 in Huntsville and Branch 276 in Kearney begin ahead of the 7:00 p.m. broadcast on August 22.
