The Voice Returns: Steven Page Comes to Huntsville

Tuesday, 16 June 2026 00:05

An exploration of Canadian music icon Steven Page’s prolific post-Barenaked Ladies career ahead of his upcoming summer performance at the Huntsville Festival of the Arts

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts is set to welcome back one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in Canadian music history. On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Steven Page will take the stage at the Algonquin Theatre. Backed by the Steven Page Trio—featuring guitar virtuoso Craig Northey of the Odds and cellist Kevin Fox—the performance promises to deliver the exact brand of sharp wit, deep musicality, and soaring vocal range that has defined Page’s nearly four-decade career.

For the audience gathering in the heart of Muskoka, the show is more than just a night of world-class pop-rock craftsmanship; it is an encounter with the primary architect behind a golden era of Canadian music.

The history of Page’s previous band, Barenaked Ladies (BNL), is the stuff of Canadian music legend. Founded in Scarborough, Ontario, in 1988 by Steven Page and Ed Robertson, the group began as a quirky acoustic duo before expanding into a five-piece powerhouse. Their 1991 self-titled yellow cassette tape became the first independent release in Canadian history to achieve platinum status, paving the way for their major-label debut, Gordon, in 1992. That album, powered by massive hits like "Brian Wilson" and "If I Had a Million Dollars"—both written or co-written by Page—became a defining soundtrack of the 1990s.

By 1998, the band achieved global superstardom with the release of Stunt, propelled by the chart-topping explosion of "One Week" and Page's deeply resonant vocals on "It's All Been Done". For years, the band's signature dynamic relied entirely on the creative and vocal contrast between Robertson's rapid-fire delivery and Page's operatic, emotionally raw vocal cords.

However, the internal mechanics of the band began to fray under the weight of constant touring, creative differences, and personal struggles. Following Page's highly publicized arrest for drug possession in 2008, the internal tension reached a breaking point. In early 2009, the band issued a statement announcing that Page was leaving Barenaked Ladies by mutual agreement to pursue solo opportunities. It was an amicable split on paper, but it marked the definitive end of an era.

Since Page's departure in 2009, Barenaked Ladies have continued to record and tour as a four-piece, while Page has pursued a successful solo career encompassing music, theatre and collaborative projects.

Without Page’s soaring vocal range and theatrical vulnerability, the band's newer material has largely tilted away from the complex, bittersweet emotional depth that grounded their early work, leaning instead into safe, novelty-leaning pop. Page was the emotional anchor that balanced the band's inherent silliness. His absence left a void that could not be filled by bright harmonies or upbeat tempos alone, turning a once-unpredictable, generation-defining rock band into a nostalgic, comfortable heritage act.

Free from the constraints of corporate band expectations, Steven Page launched a remarkably prolific and versatile solo career that completely redefined his artistic footprint. Since 2009, he has released five acclaimed solo albums, culminating in his latest masterfully crafted studio effort, 2022's Excelsior. His solo work allowed him to lean heavily into theatrical arrangements, collaborating extensively with Toronto's innovative Art of Time Ensemble and performing alongside major symphony orchestras across the country.

Page’s artistic hunger has consistently led him far beyond traditional rock venues. Over his solo career, he has composed multiple original theatrical scores for the prestigious Stratford Festival, including their acclaimed 2018 staging of Macbeth. He further expanded his theatrical footprint by co-writing the musical Here’s What It Takes alongside Governor General’s Award-winning Canadian playwright Daniel MacIvor. When the global pandemic abruptly halted live theater rehearsals and touring in 2020, Page quickly adapted by launching "Live From Home." This weekly, interactive livestream concert series broadcast via Zoom successfully built a dedicated global community of fans and has since run for more than 140 episodes.

The Steven Page interview regarding his work with the Stratford Festival features him discussing the intricate and foundational role music plays within major theatrical productions.

Furthermore, Page remains a vital fixture in the Canadian rock landscape as a member of the Canadian supergroup The Trans-Canada Highwaymen, alongside Chris Murphy of Sloan, Moe Berg of The Pursuit of Happiness, and his trio bandmate Craig Northey. He has spent recent years touring internationally, from intimate rooms to packed sports arenas as the hand-picked opening act for rock icons The Who.

When Steven Page steps onto the Algonquin Theatre stage this July, the audience won't be watching an artist living in the past. They will be witnessing a masterful performer operating at the peak of his solo powers, bringing decades of history and a beautifully uncompromised voice to the Muskoka stage.
