Damaged batteries can lead to thermal runaway causing fire
Huntsville Fire is warning residents about the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Calleja says the batteries themselves aren't the problem. It's how they're handled, stored and charged that can create a hazard.
Calleja says that if a damaged battery becomes unstable, it can enter thermal runaway, causing intense heat and potentially fire or explosions.
Fire officials say don't charge batteries on beds or couches, don't use damaged chargers, and never store or charge them in hallways, stairs or doorways where they could block an escape route.
