HMATA launches new website to help attract visitors

Friday, 2 May 2025 08:04

The Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax Assoc. launched the new site

The Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax Association (HMATA) reported that a new website called explorehuntsville.ca has been launched to attract more visitors to the Town, in the April 30, 2025, General Committee meeting.

HMATA derives from the Town’s Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) program, where the Town collects a 4% tax from short-term accommodations (under 30 days), such as hotels, motels, lodges, inns, bed and breakfasts, and short-term rentals).

The taxes provide the Town with funding to promote and develop its tourism sector through local events, sports and other areas.

HMATA’s new website will highlight community events, dinning, lodging, and have an emphasis on outdoor activities.

Their report outlines a plan that will involve “innovating marketing strategies, product development and robust partnerships aimed at enhancing the tourism sector,” with a goal towards growth and sustainability for the Town.

Their strategies will showcase heritage, the natural beauty of the Town, and other “diverse attractions,” and year-round experiences.

2025-2026 plans include partnering with Muskoka Tourism to create greater awareness of the Town, in addition to supporting existing community initiatives.

Their report adds, “Explore Huntsville continues to support, sponsor and/or market events, festivals, conferences, cultural celebrations and sporting events that showcase Huntsville’s unique offerings, attract visitors, and generate buzz, serving as a platform for experiential marketing, networking, and community engagement.”

It indicates that efforts have also included a “successful bid” to host the 2026 Ontario 55+ Winter Games, featuring, 1000 athletes in various sports at different venues beginning February 3rd until the 5th.

It continues that the association also funds and participates in community programs such as River Mill Park skating, Lighting in Downtown Huntsville, Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery, Muskoka Home of the Stars, and Birding in Muskoka Nature Takes Flight, and the return of Eclipse Walk of Light.

Future campaigns are reported to include local partnerships with the BIA, Festival of Arts, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Historical Society, Hockey Associations, and provide support to charities.

They continue that last December they donated $30,000 to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

Their 2025-2026 Business Plan is scheduled to be posted online this month.
