The club will be celebrating its 125th anniversary with free crokicurl and curling at River Mill Park

Huntsville Council approved a Curling Club request to assemble a crokicurl rink at River Mill Park, in the December 10, 2025, meeting.

Representative of the Huntsville Curling Club, Ron Kreutzer, said the request is so they can celebrate the club’s 125-year anniversary on Curling Day in Canada on January 31st, 2026.

The club is also in the final stages of transforming their location into a fully wheelchair-accessible facility to support community inclusivity.

The HCC will partner with the Town’s Huntsville Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming event which will involve assembling a temporary ice rink that will allow for playing both crokicurl (a combination of crokinole and curling) and traditional curling on it that will be available throughout the 2025-2026 winter season.

According to the agenda, the Chamber proposed the installation of the crokicurl rink to support the HCC’s anniversary and to promote the Curling Day in Canada.

Halley Clover, of the Chamber of Commerce, said the crokicurl portion will be a circular board painted on the ice.

Kreutzer said the event won’t cost the Town anything, and the goal “is to promote and celebrate the curling club.”

He added that the event will also be open and free to the public, and will be broadcasted on TSN news, who select one club each year, and the Huntsville club was chosen this year.

The event schedule breakdown is as follows:

  • Crokicurl will be from 12:00 - 2:30pm.
  • Other Curling Club events will include an open house from 2:30-5:30pm, the TSN live Broadcast from 4-5pm, and the 125th year celebration from 6-10pm.

Councillor, Scott Morrison, expressed that the Town is lucky to have these types of organizations “creating monumental moments” and forming partnerships such this club did with the Chamber.

Mayor, Nancy Alcock, concurred about the community collaborations. She said, “It’s incredible” and added that she “feels blessed” to be a part of the Town.

The Director of Operations was authorized to sign a Park Service Agreement with the Chamber, which will include the necessary insurance, indemnification, and responsibilities in relation to the rink.
