The new Municipal Accomodation Tax program starts January 1st
Lake of Bays Council received an update on the Township’s local economic development activity, in the December 9, 2025, meeting.
Staff summarized the progress made throughout the third and fourth quarters of this year, including ongoing initiatives, community partnerships, and business engagement efforts aimed at strengthening the Township's economic landscape.
They indicated that they hosted quarterly business meetings as part of the Economic Development Core Advisory Group, with Q3 and Q4 sessions held at local business facilities.
Discussions included areas such as funding and grant opportunities, business challenges, and Township programs that help local businesses access financial support.
They also reported that significant progress was made in tourism development, particularly in preparation for the January 1, 2026, launch of the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).
Staff indicated that they have been working on developing a locally managed tourism corporation, advancing a long-term tourism strategy, and supporting several off-season events that helped boost seasonal visitation.
They reported that housing and community development initiatives have also been progressing, including the Baysville Housing Initiative and other affordability partnerships.
Local business recognition also continued through the new Business Support and Recognition Policy, which celebrated six businesses for major milestones and launched a four-part video series, called “Muskoka Business Video Week Series,” said staff.
They said the recognition helped showcased the success of the businesses and improve visibility and engagement.
Staff explained that the focus includes “strengthening partnerships and economic initiatives.”
The Township also maintained strong communication with its bi-monthly Economic Development e-Newsletter, reaching more than 200 businesses and sharing updates on funding, by-laws, events, and MAT implementation.
Additional efforts included grant administration, networking events, commercial planning engagement, youth workforce development, regional tourism collaboration, and monthly coordination with Muskoka's Economic Development Officers.
Councillor, Jacqueline Godard, said she’s happy they have a business recognition policy in place, and inquired about whether the attendance of the quarterly business meetings.
Staff indicated that the meetings are well attended with 10 business currently show up, “and many people want to join.” However, it’s important to be mindful of creating an attendance balance between the various sectors.
Mayor, Terry Glover, said that he has attended the business meetings in the past, post Covid, and the businesses still attended and “put their heads down” to deal with issues, which he “hopes stays optimistic because we could all just sit around and gripe.”
