The international film festival takes place this weekend
A local Indigenous leader is being celebrated on the international stage this weekend.
The short documentary Red Girl Rising follows Joyce Jonathan Crone, a Mohawk matriarch, retired teacher, and activist from Huntsville, as she works to open hearts and bridge gaps in Indigenous education.
Directed by First Nations filmmakers Kim Stadfeld and Faith Howe, the film highlights Joyce’s dedication to community, her radio show on The Bay, and her public events, including ribbon skirt workshops.
Red Girl Rising will screen at the Red Nation International Film Festival, part of a growing effort to showcase Indigenous stories and the work of emerging Indigenous filmmakers.
Festival organizers say the film is a reminder of the impact one person can have in fostering compassion, education, and cultural understanding.
