Councilors speculated on the identity of a resident
The Ontario Ombudsman has ruled that the Township of Lake of Bays council violated the Municipal Act during part of a closed meeting last year.
The investigation found that a small portion of council’s September 10, 2024, closed session — dealing with the controversial Roads License Agreement program — did not fit the legal exceptions allowing private discussion.
Ombudsman Paul Dubé said the contravention lasted about a minute, when councillors speculated about a resident’s identity and discussed a Facebook group linked to the issue.
Dubé noted the rest of the meeting complied with the Act but advised council to review the rules around closed sessions.
