The traffic blitz starts today
As Canada Road Safety Week kicks off, the OPP say poor decisions behind the wheel led to most of the 382 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads last year.
Speed, distraction, impaired driving, and not wearing seatbelts were key contributors to fatal crashes in 2024.
Speeding accounted for 95 deaths, inattentive driving claimed 80 lives, and 53 fatalities involved alcohol or drugs. Sixty unbuckled drivers and passengers also lost their lives.
Motorcyclist deaths reached a 20-year high, with 57 fatalities, and not all were at fault.
The OPP also reported 35 pedestrian and 12 cyclist deaths.
Police across the country will ramp up enforcement and education starting today and until May 19th.
Drivers are urged to make safe choices and help ensure everyone gets home safely this long weekend.
