Council approved parking enforcement of accessible parking at the new station, but acknowledge issues with having enough parking for riders
Huntsville Council approved parking enforcement for accessible spaces at the new Northlander train platform on Station Road during its September 30, 2026, meeting.
Ontario Northland approached the Town requesting assistance with parking enforcement at the platform, which is currently under development as part of the return of Northlander passenger rail service.
The change will allow municipal bylaw staff to enforce restrictions for accessible parking spaces at the site, ensuring they are used by vehicles with valid accessible parking permits.
The Town already has authority under its existing bylaw to enforce accessible parking and fire access route restrictions on several private properties, including Huntsville District Memorial Hospital, the King William Street Mall and the SmartCentres area.
Staff recommended adding the train station location to the bylaw and said it can be incorporated into the Town's daily parking enforcement route without requiring additional staff.
They reported that enforcement could also generate additional revenue, although an estimate is not available.
Discussion also turned to the broader issue of parking availability once Northlander service begins.
Councillor, Bob Stone, asked whether additional parking is anticipated as part of the agreement with Ontario Northland.
Staff said the Town is currently working with Ontario Northland on a draft agreement and details surrounding the site. The immediate priority is moving ahead with the Huntsville platform, and while enhancements are expected, staff could not confirm whether other parking areas will be included.
Mayor, Nancy Alcock, said limited space at the location is currently a challenge and indicated a future Council will need to consider nearby land for additional parking, including overnight parking.
She added that Ontario Northland's current priority is getting the platform built and ready, so passenger rail service is available, making the larger parking issue secondary at this stage.
Councillor, Jason Fitzgerald, acknowledged the parking concern, saying, "We know it's going to be an issue," and indicated it will have to be dealt with and in a timely manner as the project progresses.
Alcock emphasized that “it’s critical” that the community have parking available “so they will use the service.”
