Police say victims were taken for thousands of dollars
The Huntsville OPP issued a warning about a spike in cyber frauds in the region.
Police said victims had been receiving pop-ups on their computers claiming to be from Microsoft or UltraViewer, telling them their system was hacked and urging them to call a number for help. Once they did, scammers convinced people to pay thousands of dollars to remove fake viruses.
Police reminded residents not to call any number that appears in a pop-up and not to click any links. Instead, take your computer to a trusted service provider.
Microsoft has also advised users that it does not make unsolicited calls, does not include phone numbers in error messages, and will not ask for payment through cryptocurrency or gift cards.
Anyone who suspects fraud or has been targeted is asked to report it to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
