The move follows a botched new school opening in Parry Sound
Ontario’s Education Minister Paul Calandra has taken control of the Near North District School Board, citing widespread mismanagement that has affected students.
Using new powers under legislation passed last month, Calandra says he will oversee the board until a provincial supervisor is appointed. A ministry investigation found trustees and the director of education were poorly informed and lacked accountability, contributing to delays in opening a Parry Sound K-to-12 school.
The minister has ordered professional development, monthly public meetings, and a plan to restore community confidence.
Critics call the move a power grab, but the government says it ensures students are put first.
