Bates Island was completely flattened, with all campsites destroyed
Hundreds of campers were stranded in Algonquin Park over the weekend after a suspected tornado hit the region Saturday night. With Highway 630 washed out by flash flooding, helicopters began evacuating people late Sunday.
The road is the only northern access to the Kiosk area, and there’s no timeline for repairs.
Even ATV trails were impassable, and crews were stretched across the region responding to damage.
A local arena in Mattawa was turned into an intake centre, with the Red Cross assisting evacuees.
