The build continues this week with the launch on Friday
There’s been a great turnout for the Hope Arises traditional birchbark canoe build at River Mill Park in Huntsville.
Hundreds of people came out during the first week to watch Master Builder Chuck Commanda build the canoe using traditional methods. Commanda learned the craft from his grandparents when he was just 12 years old.
The project is also giving people a chance to learn about Indigenous culture and traditional knowledge, including plant medicines, connections to the land and water, and the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
The build continues this week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the canoe’s birthing ceremony and launch happening Friday at 10 a.m. at River Mill Park.
