The separation is expected to take 18 months
On July 28, Lake of Bays Council gave notice it will end its shared Fire Department Administration Service Agreement with the Town of Huntsville.
The move begins an 18-month transition toward independent fire departments, reflecting different growth patterns and fire risks in the two communities.
Huntsville will continue providing fire services through early 2027 to ensure seamless coverage.
Lake of Bays CAO Geoff Carleton says the change will allow a “made-in-Lake of Bays approach” to staffing, training, and emergency planning tailored to the township’s unique geography.
Both municipalities say they remain committed to collaborating where it makes sense and will update residents throughout the transition.
