Huntsville to commemorate National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

Monday, 15 September 2025 11:39

Hope Arises will lead a march through Downtown Huntsville, remembering the children who never came back home

Huntsville is set to host its 5th Annual Orange Shirt Day activities on September 30, marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the history and healing of residential school survivors, their families, and children who never returned home.

The march begins at 10:45 a.m. at River Mill Park and will move through downtown Huntsville, passing businesses displaying orange ribbons. Banners created by Hope Arises will reflect the Gifts of the Seven Grandfathers teachings. The march returns to River Mill Park for a closing ceremony at 11:45 a.m., featuring guest speakers.

This family-friendly event will go ahead rain or shine, with photography and videography throughout.

Residents are encouraged to wear orange on September 30 to show respect for survivors, their families, and the children lost to residential schools.

Ahead of the march, the Survivors' Flag will be raised at Civic Square on Monday, September 22 at noon, remaining there through September 30 to mark Truth and Reconciliation Week.

Truth and Reconciliation Week, designated by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, preserves the memory and legacy of residential schools for future generations.
