So far this year no humans have tested positive for the disease

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is warning residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes after insects collected in Barrie tested positive for West Nile virus.

The virus has also been detected in a bird and a horse in the region, but there are no confirmed human cases so far this year.

The health unit recommends using insect repellent, covering exposed skin and removing standing water around homes.

The risk of West Nile virus is highest in late summer.
