The police warn about door to door home repair and upgrade scams
OPP are warning residents about two scams currently targeting communities across the province.
Police say warmer weather often brings an increase in door-to-door contractor scams, involving people offering driveway paving, roofing or home repairs at supposedly limited-time prices. Investigators say victims are often pressured to pay cash up front and may receive poor-quality work — or no work at all.
The OPP is also warning about a newer “dirty oil” scam targeting people selling vehicles privately online.
In those cases, suspects posing as buyers allegedly tamper with vehicles to create smoke and make it appear the engine has serious problems, then pressure sellers into accepting thousands less than the asking price.
Police are reminding residents to research contractors carefully, avoid rushed decisions and never leave vehicles unattended during private sales.
