Last year, police laid nearly 4,000 charges and nine people lost their lives
The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to make safety a priority as the Civic Holiday long weekend gets underway.
Police are urging motorists to slow down, avoid distractions, wear a seatbelt, drive sober and move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside.
During last year's long weekend, OPP officers laid more than 3,500 speeding charges, 204 impaired driving charges and 77 distracted driving charges.
Nine people also lost their lives in vehicle-related collisions. Police say making safe choices behind the wheel can help ensure everyone arrives home safely.
