The Fire Dept. says it will move away from door to door pick ups
The Huntsville Fire Department is switching things up for its annual Salvation Army food drive, marking a major change for a nearly four-decade-old local tradition.
For its 38th year, Project Porchlight will move away from door-to-door collections due to volunteer shortages and safety concerns. Instead, firefighters are hosting special community events on Wednesday, December 2nd at Station 1 in Huntsville and Station 5 in Port Sydney, complete with family activities and photo ops with Santa.
Local grocery store drop-offs are also expanding, with firefighters appearing on select dates to collect non-perishable items. Fire Chief Gary Monahan says the new format keeps the drive going strong while creating a safer, more engaging experience for the community.
