The fire began in an air handling unit
Quick action by staff at Muskoka Landing Long Term Care in Huntsville likely prevented a serious fire overnight.
Fire crews were called just after midnight Thursday after staff smelled smoke and pulled the alarm. A maintenance worker traced the source to an air-handling unit on the roof and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before firefighters arrived.
Officials say the fire was caused by two overheated fan motors that ignited plastic housing.
The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department credits regular fire drills and staff training for the calm and effective response — and reminds all property owners to review their own fire safety plans.
